  5.     From humble beginnings as a screen capture utility, Hijaak has
  6. grown so powerful that it has appended 'Pro' to its name with this
  7. upgrade to Version 2. It's the first utility you should have, and
  8. perhaps the only one you need, for the manipulation of graphics
  9. images in almost any format anywhere on your system.  For screen
  10. capture, graphic file format conversion, basic image editing and
  11. processing, and file viewing, it takes the place of the plethora of
  12. shareware utilities with which I previously clogged my hard disk,
  13. even supplanting my previous favorite, Graphics Workshop for
  14. Windows.  You don't even need to know the format of an image file to
  15. work with it in Hijaak Pro.
  16.     Image conversion in Hijaak Pro is powerful and easy.  The
  17. program knows more than 70 vector, raster and fax-image formats,
  18. although some are import-only or export-only.  There are 24
  19. supported fax flavors alone.  Windows clipboard images, JPEG
  20. compressed graphics, and Kodak Photo CD images are among the new
  21. formats supported in Version 2. My major disappointment in this
  22. regard is that, although it can export to .EPS (encapsulated
  23. PostScript), it cannot import .EPS images.  Macintosh, Amiga and
  24. even Sun image f ormats are fully translatable.
  25.     Effortless screen capture in any video format is one of Hijaak
  26. Pro's greatest assets.  You can capture the entire screen, a
  27. cursor-defined area, or a specific window or icon as easily as
  28. hitting a predefined hotkey combination while Hijaak Pro is iconized
  29. in the background.  Once defined, the image can be captured to the
  30. Windows clipboard or to the Hijaak window, saved to a disk file in
  31. any of the supported formats, or output directly to your printer or
  32. plotter.  A separate 6K TSR for DOS-session screen capt ures can be
  33. loaded from within Windows or from the DOS prompt.  In addition to
  34. acquiring images from screen capture, you can scan a graphic image
  35. directly into Hijaak Pro from any TWAIN-compliant scanner.
  36.     Hijaak Pro integrates directly into many major word processing
  37. and page layout (desktop publishing) applications, so that you can
  38. use it from within those applications to import graphic images in
  39. formats the native application does not support directly.  For
  40. example, I'm no longer limited by the graphic import filters that
  41. come with Microsoft Word.  If Hijaak is running in the background
  42. while I'm in Word, all the Hijaak-supported graphics formats
  43. magically appear in the drop-down menu in Word's "Insert Pic ture"
  44. dialog box, and can be directly imported without jumping over into
  45. Hijaak Pro for the conversion.
  46.     Although they will not replace PhotoShop or even PhotoFinish,
  47. Hijaak Pro has image editing and processing capabilities which are
  48. adequate for many "quick 'n' dirty" jobs.  These include the ability
  49. to crop, rotate, stretch or shrink the image, change resolution,
  50. change number of colors, smooth, invert colors, convert to
  51. greyscale, optimize palette, do histogram equalization, and adjust
  52. brightness and contrast.  There is a small preview image which
  53. changes as you apply your edits, and you can undo your last c hange
  54. if you don't like the result.  You can also clone your image and
  55. manipulate the clone, leaving the original intact in case you aren't
  56. satisfied with your experimentation.
  57.     I love the Hijaak Browser, which you can run from inside Hijaak
  58. Pro or as a standalone.  If you're like me, your hard disk is
  59. clogged with a variety of graphics images, from clipart you've
  60. acquired with various applications, to downloaded .GIFs, to the
  61. .BMPs and .ICOs that are ubiquitous in Windows.  I also scan in a
  62. lot of photographs and diagrams to use in my academic presentations
  63. and even correspondence.  With the Browser, I've been able to build
  64. a browseable database of my images in the form of a catalog ue
  65. folder for each of my image-laden directories.  This process
  66. collects images from all of the graphic formats supported by Hijaak
  67. Pro.  Once the catalogue folder is built, the Browser displays a set
  68. of bitmapped, full-color preview images, or "thumbnails," sorted
  69. however I please whenever I open that directory.  You can also make
  70. a custom catalog file that contains images from diverse directories
  71. across your disk, e.g., united by a single theme, and you can create
  72. nested subfolders inside any catalogue folde r.
  73.     Unlike other graphics viewers that produce thumbnails, the
  74. Browser puts all the images for a directory into this single file,
  75. as opposed to space-gobbling individual thumbnail files for each.
  76. Image files can be copied, moved or deleted by dragging and dropping
  77. the thumbnails without going into File Manager or the equivalent.  A
  78. click on any thumbnail opens the full image for conversion, export
  79. or image manipulation.  I did find, however, that my system froze
  80. when a catalogue folder got sufficiently enormous, i.e., several
  81. hundred images.  It's easy enough, though, to split it into several
  82. smaller folders by selecting only a portion of the images in the
  83. directory at a time.  Several dozen images won't cause you any
  84. problems in a given folder.
  85.     My only other complaint about Hijaak Pro is what a resource hog
  86. it is.  I have a fast 486 with 8 Megs of RAM, but I still have to
  87. shut down everything extraneous I might have running to use it with
  88. Microsoft Word.  Loading, zooming and scrolling images, on the other
  89. hand, are not intolerably slow on my system; I really have no
  90. business doing graphics-intensive work with only 8 Megs of memory
  91. anyway!  Anyone with more than a passing need for screen capture,
  92. graphic image browsing and cataloging, conversion or basic
  93. processing, could wrap it all up in one package with Hijaak Pro.
